De magie van Zelliges: Handgemaakte imperfectie uit Marokko

The magic of Zelliges: Handmade imperfection from Morocco

Looking for a wall tile that truly lives? Then you'll quickly find yourself looking for Zellige. These Moroccan tiles have become incredibly popular in Dutch kitchens and bathrooms in recent years, and for good reason. But what makes this tile so special? In this blog post, we delve into the world of craftsmanship, color, and the iconic "imperfection" of Zellige.

What exactly is a Zellige?

A Zellige is a handmade clay tile from the Fez region of Morocco. The process has remained unchanged for centuries: the clay is shaped by hand, fired in traditional ovens, and then beveled with a hammer (the menkach ). This creates the characteristic beveled edges, allowing the tiles to be laid with a wafer-thin joint.

Why everyone falls in love with Zelliges

The secret of Zellige lies in its nuances. No two tiles are identical.

  • Color nuances: Within a single package, you'll find slight variations in shade. This creates a beautiful, vibrant effect on your wall that machine-made tiles can never match.

  • The shine: The way light reflects off the irregular surface is unique. In the morning light, your kitchen wall looks completely different than it does in the evening under artificial light.

  • Authenticity: The small bubbles, pits, and color variations are not flaws, but rather proof of pure craftsmanship.

Zelliges in your interior

Whether you choose a classic shade of white ( Blanc Carrara ) or a bold color like deep sea green or warm terracotta, Zellige tiles suit almost any interior style. In a sleek, modern kitchen, they add warmth and character, while in a country-style bathroom, they enhance the rustic ambiance.

Tegelsier's tip: "Zelliges are like art on the wall. By placing the tiles tightly together, that typical Moroccan interplay of lines is created."

Maintenance and installation

While Zellige tiles are beautiful, they do require a slightly different installation approach than standard hardware store tiles. Because they're hand-cut, they're never exactly the same thickness. This requires a professional (or a handy, patient DIYer!) who installs the tiles by feel. However, once installed and grouted, they're very easy to maintain and will last a lifetime.

Are you still unsure about the color?

We understand that choosing the right color from a screen can be difficult. You really need to see the sheen and texture in person.
