Zelliges plaatsen: 5 gouden tips voor een perfect resultaat

Installing Zelliges: 5 golden tips for a perfect result

Zellige tiles are beautiful, but they're not your typical tiles. Their character lies in their irregularity. Will you do it yourself or hire a tiler? With these 5 tips, you'll ensure your wall looks exactly like it does in those beautiful interior design magazines.

1. Pre-mix the tiles

Zellige tiles are hand-fired and hand-dyed. This ensures there are always nuances within a single color. Remove all the tiles from their individual boxes and mix them together before you start applying them. This prevents color blotches and creates that beautiful, vibrant "Tegelsier" look across the entire wall.

2. Use a wafer-thin joint

What's unique about Zellige tiles is that they're hand- chiseled . This creates a beveled edge. Place the tiles as tightly as possible against each other. You rarely need spacers; a 1 to 2 mm joint is often sufficient to preserve the natural charm.

3. Choose the right grout color

The grout color can make or break the look of your wall. Want a subtle overall effect? Choose a grout color that's as close as possible to the tile color. Want each individual tile to stand out? Choose a contrasting color (for example, a light gray grout with a dark green tile).

4. Double bonding (Butter-Floating)

Because the back of a Zellige tile is never perfectly straight, we recommend the double-buttering method. Apply adhesive to both the wall and the back of the tile. This ensures that each tile is securely attached, despite any variations in thickness.

5. Impregnate for extra protection

Zellige tiles have a glaze, but the edges and small cracks (crackles) can be porous. If you're using them in the shower or behind the stove, treat the wall with an impregnating agent after grouting. This makes cleaning much easier and prevents limescale or grease from penetrating the tile.
